ЗАГС certificates and court decisions are structurally different documents
Russian divorce records come in two primary forms: the свидетельство о расторжении брака (divorce certificate) issued by ЗАГС (the civil-registry office), and the решение суда (court decision) that grants the divorce when children are involved, property is contested, or one spouse objects. The ЗАГС certificate is a single-page standardized document confirming the dissolution fact, date, and both former spouses’ full names. The court decision is a multi-page legal document that includes the court’s findings, parties’ arguments, custody and property provisions, and the резолютивная часть (operative part) granting the dissolution.
A translator who treats both document types identically or who omits the court decision’s substantive provisions produces an incomplete translation. We identify the document type first, then apply the appropriate translation approach: concise registry-format handling for ЗАГС certificates, and detailed legal-context translation for court decisions that preserves every provision.
