Medical declarations and civil-registry certificates serve different purposes
In Brazil, the declaração de óbito (death declaration, also called atestado de óbito) is the medical document issued by the attending physician, hospital, or IML (Instituto Médico Legal) that records the causa mortis with CID-10 coding. The certidão de óbito is the civil-registry document issued by the cartório de registro civil that officially records the death. In Portugal, a similar split exists between the certificado de óbito (medical) and the certidão de óbito (civil registry from the conservatória).
Different filings may require different documents. We identify the document type first and translate with the appropriate medical or civil-registry terminology, preserving all fields regardless of which document is submitted.
